Transaction Concepts Defined:

Online Transactions - Data transmissions over the Internet.

The term Online Transaction is used to describe any one of three distinct phases of data transmission:

Order Placing - Credit card info is transmitted "Over the Internet" by customer.

Order Retrieval - Credit card info is retrieved "Over the Internet" by merchant.

Authorization and Settlement (Transfer) of Funds - Credit card info is transmitted "Over the Internet" (vs. direct-connect modem line) by merchant to the bank.

Merchant to Bank Transactions need not occur as an "Over the Internet" Online Transaction. In fact, Merchant to Bank Transactions most commonly occur as a Direct-Connect Modem Line Transaction using ICVerify, PCAuthorize for Windows, or MacAuthorize software, all available at this website.

2. What about Cybercash vs. Transaction Software (e.g. PCAuthorize)?

All of the above achieve Real Time Online OrderTaking and Processing to Bank. However, Cybercash is a complicated ONLINE transaction processing service. It requires both the merchant and the merchant's Internet Provider to install a cumbersome software system. It's real-time processing functionality is limited to Internet sales only. The concept is based upon an inherent distrust of the merchant in that CyberCash does not allow access by the merchant to customer credit card data which is valuable to the merchant for any subsequent transactions with customers. Real-time Internet online processing can already be achieved with established direct modem dialup software such as PCAuthorize, MacAuthorize, and ICVerify. These transaction software products offer much more than simply Internet online transaction funcionality. The transaction software permits the processing of all types of sales: Internet Online, Telephone, Fax, Mail, and In-Person sales.
